How to wear bright lips

Bright, vivid colours on the lips should not simply be an uber glamorous memory from the bygone festive season. More than anything, it is the key to giving you get a head start on one of biggest trends for Spring Summer 2011. Yes that’s right, if you didn’t know, you know now. The colour palette this spring is beyond kaleidoscopic.

While you don’t necessarily have to take the route of acid green lips as seen at Alexandre Hercovitch, it is understandable that even wearing attention-drawing bright fuchsias and pillar box reds on your lips still takes a certain level of confidence. Well, it’s actually not as difficult as you think. Pablo Rodriguez, senior make up maestro at MAC cosmetics – the ultimate purveyors of shades that encompass the entire spectrum of the rainbow – has some tips to ensure that when you do go loud with your colours, you can also pout proud.
Gloss is very high maintenance. If you don’t want to keep re-applying every 2 minutes then go for matte or sheer coverage. Gloss does look amazing but it is highly impractical.

A lip primer gives the lips a silky smooth texture which ensures your lips stay put all day.

Bright colours are a great way to make thin lips look fuller.

Avoid looking like a throwback from the 80’s and don’t wear a strong colour on the lips if you are going to go bold on the eyes and cheeks.

However, if you are feeling confident and want to work bold eyes with bright lips, the key is to keep the skin looking fresh. Avoid a heavy foundation and instead go for a tinted moisturiser. If you need extra coverage, put on some concealer. This look is all about minimal meeting dramatic. Modern make up should convey the concept of low maintenance.

Finally, EXPERIMENT because make-up is all about breaking the rules!
